Emiliano Zapata Salazar (1879–1919) was a leading figure in the Mexican Revolution of 1910–1920, the main leader of the people's revolution in the Mexican state of Morelos, and the inspiration of the agrarian movement called Zapatismo.
The coherence of Zapata's struggle and his agrarian principles, in line with the demands and hopes of the campesino communities of the centre and south of Mexico, have given this caudillo a special place in Mexico's history. Zapata remains an iconic figure in Mexico, used both as a nationalist symbol as well as a symbol of the neo-Zapatista movement.
