Description

The 2022 Negro Leagues Baseball Commemorative Coin Program celebrates the establishment of the Negro National League, the first successful, organized professional African American baseball league in the United States. The Mint struck $5 gold coins, $1 silver coins, and half dollar clad coins with different designs as part of the program.

The Negro National League was formed in 1920 in Kansas City, Missouri in response to African American baseball players being banned from the major leagues. Other leagues formed across the country. The league was formed with former player Rube Foster as its president.

Obverse

Depicts a Negro Leagues tour bus that served as their home on the road when players were refused entry to hotels and restaurants. The batter exemplifies the determination to play the game he loves, regardless of challenging circumstances.

The objective of the defensive team (fielding team) is to prevent batters from becoming runners, and to prevent runners' advance around the bases. A run is scored when a runner legally advances around the bases in order and touches home plate (the place where the player started as a batter).
