Description

The 1993 World War II Silver Dollars were produced in 1993. However, since World War II took place from 1941-1945, the coins display the dates 1991-1995 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of these years. The commemorative coin program included three different coins, a clad half dollar, silver dollar, and $5 gold coin.

The military history of the United States in World War II covers the victorious American war against the Axis Powers, starting with the 7 December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. The war in Europe involved aid to Britain, her allies, and the Soviet Union, with the US supplying munitions until it could ready an invasion force. US forces were first tested to a limited degree in the North African Campaign and then employed more significantly with British Forces in Italy in 1943–45, where US forces, representing about a third of the Allied forces deployed, bogged down after Italy surrendered and the Germans took over. Finally, the main invasion of France took place in June 1944, under General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Being invaded from all sides, it became clear that Germany would lose the war. Berlin fell to the Soviets in May 1945, and with Adolf Hitler dead, the Germans surrendered.

Depicts a soldier in battle on the Normandy Shores of June 06, 1944 or the D-Day.

The Normandy landings were the landing operations on Tuesday, 6 June 1944 of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day, it was the largest seaborne invasion in history. The operation began the liberation of German-occupied France (and later Europe) from Nazi control, and laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front.

More than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end on June 6, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Normandy. The D-Day cost was high - more than 9,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded but more than 100,000 soldiers began the march across Europe to defeat Hitler.

Depicts a quote from Dwight D. Eisenhower with sleeve insignia from the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force.

Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) was the headquarters of the Commander of Allied forces in northwest Europe, from late 1943 until the end of World War II. U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower was the commander in SHAEF throughout its existence.

The insignia depicts the sword of liberation in the form of a crusaders' sword, the flames arising from the hilt and leaping up the blade. Above the sword is a rainbow emblematic of hope containing all the colors of which the National Flags of the Allies are composed.
