Obverse

The 12 stars, in between which are inserted the engraver's initials 'GC', surround the centre where, on the left, from bottom to top, between the two mint marks, are the date and the word Luxembourg written vertically. On the right is the effigy of His Royal Highness the Grand Duke Henri, in profile facing to the right, in 'new style' linear graphics. The left 40% of the coin has the effigy cut off and the style of the stars inverted.

Mint marks:
2002–2004: Mercury's wand, logo of the Royal Dutch Mint
2005–2006: S letter, logo of the Mint of Finland

Mint master marks (the star indicates that the piece was struck at the beginning of the term of office of a successor):
2002: Bow and arrow+star (E. J. van Schauwenburg)
2003–2004: Sailboat (Maarten Brouwer)

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 1 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “1” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
