Description

Eesti Pank issued a two-euro coin dedicated to the Estonian national bird, the barn swallow, on 12 May, the day before World Migratory Bird Day, as part of the series of circulating coins showing Estonian national symbols.

Obverse

Depicts a barn swallow flying over Estonia and two others sitting on an electricity line, the Latin name of the bird above, the country name and the date below. The arcing semi-circles and swooping diagonal lines in the design reflect the movement, dynamism and flow of the bird in flight.

The barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) is the most widespread species of swallow in the world. In fact, it appears to have the largest natural distribution of any of the world's passerine, ranging over 251 million square kilometres globally. It is a distinctive passerine bird with blue upperparts and a long, deeply forked tail. It is found in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
