Description

The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) is responsible for the country’s monetary policy. It also sets banking laws, supervises banks, and decides the interest rate with which banks operate. It was established in January 1961 to take over note issue and central banking activities from the National Bank of Egypt.

Obverse

Depicts the Egyptian Renaissance sculpture and radiant sun behind divide dates, the inscription "Central Bank of Egypt" above and "Silver Jubilee" below all surrounded by ornament lotus flowers.

The logo depicts the Egyptian Renaissance sculpture in granite by Mahmoud Mukhtar (1919–1928, Giza) and shows Sphinx and a woman raising up her veil. The Sphinx represents antiquity and the woman is the symbol of an awakened Egypt. The figure of the woman was a reference to the Egyptian women's movement led by Huda Sha'arawi, who decided to go unveiled in 1922 and had organised anti-British demonstrations.
