Description

Antonio Canova (1757–1822) was an Italian Neoclassical sculptor, famous for his marble sculptures. Often regarded as the greatest of the Neoclassical artists, his sculpture was inspired by the Baroque and the classical revival, and has been characterised as having avoided the melodramatics of the former, and the cold artificiality of the latter.

Obverse

Depicts the Hebe (Ebe) by Antonio Canova, dividing dates and surrounded by the country name. Engraver's initials below.

This sculpture depicts Hebe, the daughter of Zeus and Hera, as she serves nectar to the gods. Its beauty embodies the canonical ideals sought by Neoclassical experimentalists: the ethereal face, the fluid lines of the garments that outline and caress her body, and the graceful gesture of her arm holding the amphora harmonize with the elegant motion of the young woman, who seems to almost float.

The plaster cast from 1798 is the original model for the statue, from which the first 2 marble reconstructions were made; these are now kept at the National Gallery in Berlin and the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. Two different 1808 versions of Hebe—one found in the Devonshire Collection and the other at the Pinacoteca Comunale gallery in Forlì—differ most significantly in the support structure of the statue; in these, the artificial cloud is replaced with a simple tree trunk.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
