Depicts one of the Olavinlinna’s towers and a branch of rowan, the provincial tree of North Savonia. Country name in Finnish and Swedish on the right, engraver's initial (N) on the left.

In the heart of Savonia, in the middle of a lake landscape rises Olavinlinna (also known as St. Olaf's Castle; literally Olof's Castle), a 15th-century three-tower castle. It is built on an island in the Kyrönsalmi strait that connects the lakes Haukivesi and Pihlajavesi. It is the northernmost medieval stone fortress still standing. The castle forms a spectacular stage for the Savonlinna Opera Festival, held for the first time in summer 1912. Over the centuries its solid walls have witnessed the changes in rule over Savonia, the thunder of numerous battles and the echoes of opera festivals. The marks of Swedish, as well as Russian rulers, are apparent in the rich tapestry of the castle’s architecture.

Savonia (Finnish: Savo, Swedish: Savolax) is a historical province in the east of Finland. It borders Tavastia, Ostrobothnia and Karelia. Currently, Savonia is divided into two provinces: Northern Savonia and Southern Savonia. The largest cities in Savonia by population are Kuopio, Mikkeli, Savonlinna, Varkaus and Iisalmi. The coat of arms is a drawn hand bow and arrow crowned by a count's coronet.
