The special 1002-euro coin celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Finnish Union of Journalists (SSL). At the same time, it recalls the importance of open communication and freedom of expression.
The Finnish Union of Journalists was founded on 28 March, with 11 member associations. The oldest of these was the Eastern Finnish Journalists’ Association, founded in Vyborg in 1913. In December 1920 the Helsinki Journalists’ Association was formed, followed within a few months by the Turku, Tampere, Satakunta, Hämeenlinna, Vaasa, Northern Finland, Joensuu, Savonlinna, and Southern Finland associations. The initiative for a common union was made by the Helsinki Journalists’ Association.
