2014 was the 100th anniversary of the birth of designer Ilmari Tapiovaara. The collector coin paying tribute to legendary designer was designed by Harri Koskinen, himself a Pro Finlandia medal-winning designer and one of the top names in Finnish design.
Designer and interior architect Yrjö Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914-1999) was one of the most renowned Finnish designers. His most famous designs include the Domus and Mademoiselle chairs. In 1959 he received the Order of the Lion of Finland's "Pro-Finlandia medal", and in 1964 a gold medal at the Milan Triennial XIII for his Polar cutlery. He did much of his work for universities, schools, and also did a "Root Table" for the Finnish army. Furniture designs based on his sketches continued to be produced into the twenty-first century.
The collector coins have a part matte, part gloss finish. Designs on a matte background are executed with a gloss finish, while designs on a gloss background are rendered in matte.
