Description

This collector coin paying tribute to Finland’s nature. Finland is one of the world's northernmost countries. Of world capitals, only Reykjavík lies more to the north than Helsinki. Finland is a country of thousands of lakes and islands — about 168,000 lakes and 179,000 islands. Its largest lake, Saimaa, is the fourth largest in Europe.

Similarly, Finland has a diverse and extensive range of fauna. There are at least sixty native mammalian species, 248 breeding bird species, over 70 fish species, and 11 reptile and frog species present today, many migrating from neighboring countries thousands of years ago. Large and widely recognized wildlife mammals found in Finland are the brown bear (the national animal), gray wolf, wolverine, and elk. Three of the more striking birds are the whooper swan, a large European swan and the national bird of Finland. The endangered Saimaa ringed seal, one of only three lake seal species in the world, exists only in the Saimaa lake system of southeastern Finland, down to only 300 seals today.

This commemorative coin was packaged in a clear protective casing, set in a commemorative coin box. The maximum mintage is 5,000, and 100 coins are numbered. Numbered coins are packed in a glass case by Iittala.

It was struck as a part of the Finland 100 programme of the centennial year of Finland's independence and has been granted the Key Flag Label of the Association for Finnish Work.

Obverse

Depicts the full moon on the lighthouse island of Harmaja, a crow gazing from its perch, with the Mint of Finland’s logo (lion) on the right and surrounded by the inscription "Finnish Nature" in Finnish (above) and Swedish (below). The initial of the photographer (A) on the left.

The design is based on the winning shot in the Blue and White special category of the Nature Photograph of the Year contest. The winning photograph was shot by Kari Auvinen.

The crow symbolises the modern Finnish character – an outwardly common but intelligent bird that reacts flexibly to new situations.
