Description

The Sámi Culture commemorative coin pays tribute to the Sámi people's special relationship with nature. It was released on Sámi National Day, 6 February 2018. By decree of the Ministry of Finance, the Mint of Finland minted two versions of the coin, with nominal values of EUR 10 and EUR 20.

The Sámi (also spelled Sami or Saami) are a Finno-Ugric-speaking people inhabiting the region of Sápmi (formerly known as Lapland), which today encompasses large northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and of the Murmansk Oblast, Russia, most of the Kola Peninsula in particular. There are approximately 10,000 Sami people living in Finland. Traditionally, the Sámi have pursued a variety of livelihoods, including coastal fishing, fur trapping, and sheep herding. Their best-known means of livelihood is semi-nomadic reindeer herding.

The commemorative coin has been granted the Key Flag Label of the Association for Finnish Work.

The EUR 20 commemorative coins are individually packaged in plastic casings set in a birch veneer frame crafted by Finnish carpenter Wooden Oy. The frame is surrounded by a ribbon and the package contains a certificate of authenticity telling the story behind the collector coin.

Total mintage of the EUR 20 commemorative coin is 4000 pieces of which 100 pieces are numbered. The numbered coins are packaged in a protective clear capsule in a glass case that displays the beautiful commemorative coin brilliantly. A certificate of authenticity containing the commemorative coin’s technical specifications is also included in the package. The number of the commemorative coin is stamped on the coin's obverse.

Reverse

The design reminds us of the power of the sun in regulating the Sámi year. The Sámi are children of the sun – the moment when the first rays of the sun break through after the long polar night is still emotional to them. Country name in Finnish and Swedish, and value in the centre.
