Description

The Krugerrand is a South African coin, first minted on 3 July 1967 to help market South African gold and produced by Rand Refinery and the South African Mint. The name is a compound of Paul Kruger, the former President of the South African Republic (depicted on the obverse), and rand, the South African unit of currency. The original (One-Ounce Gold) Krugerrand is the first modern bullion coin.

The classic bullion coin was issued in 2 ounces of gold for the first time in 2018.

Obverse

Depicts a bust of Paul Kruger left, adapted from the design of Otto Schultz and struck from the original die used in 1892 for the historic Kruger half-crown coin.

Stephanus Johannes Paulus "Paul" Kruger (1825–1904) was one of the dominant political and military figures in 19th-century South Africa, and President of the South African Republic (or Transvaal) from 1883 to 1900. Nicknamed Oom Paul ("Uncle Paul"), he came to international prominence as the face of the Boer cause—that of the Transvaal and its neighbour the Orange Free State—against Britain during the Second Boer War of 1899–1902. He has been called a personification of Afrikanerdom, and remains a controversial and divisive figure; admirers venerate him as a tragic folk hero, while critics view him as the obstinate guardian of an unjust cause.

Reverse

Depicts a springbok walking right divides date, the gold content in both Afrikaans and English below.

The Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) is a medium-sized antelope found mainly in southern and southwestern Africa.

The first Springbok appeared as long ago as 1947 as a true South African symbol on the silver crown size coins. The original design is still viewed as one of the best designs in the world. Based on the original artwork of one of South Africa’s famous sculptors, Coert Laurens Steynberg, the Springbok was used on various other South African coins. These were the gold one-pound and ½ pound coins, and later the gold R1 and R2 coins. From 1960 to 1964, the Springbok reappeared on the reverse of the 50c. This prancing buck was also chosen to be the symbol on the Krugerrand from 1967 to date. The Springbok was also depicted on the R1 nickel coins from 1977 – 1990.
