Description

The year 2022 marks the 175th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Graham Bell, the great inventor whose interests and inventions had a profound impact on our modern world—and many of those advancements were made in Canada.

Alexander Graham Bell (1847–1922) was a Scottish-born inventor, scientist, and engineer who is credited with inventing and patenting the first practical telephone. He also co-founded the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1885.

Many other inventions marked Bell's later life, including groundbreaking work in optical telecommunications, hydrofoils, and aeronautics. Although Bell was not one of the 33 founders of the National Geographic Society, he had a strong influence on the magazine while serving as the second president from January 7, 1898, until 1903.

The coin (Silver 0.9999 with selective 24-karat gold plating) is a part of the 7-coin Silver Proof set, that presented in Royal Canadian Mint-branded book-style packaging with a removable lens for easy viewing.

More than just the telephone, Bell's many inventions and varied pursuits made him a significant contributor to our modern world. Those contributions, along with keywords from his life story, are listed in the word-art portrait featured on the reverse, which harnesses the power of language to present a more complete picture of this Great Inventor.

An experimental model of Bell's most famous contribution to science and technology, the telephone, appears to the left of the inventor, while Bell's signature appears near the rim. The design includes the country name, the face value, and the year of the issue.
