Description

This coin is the last in a series of seven coins depicting Maltese prehistoric sites.

Obverse

Depicts the entrance to the Hypogeum, a series of chambers carved into the rock, spread over three levels. The issuing country and the date above. The engraver's initials NGB on the lower right. The twelve stars of the European Union surround the design on the outer ring.

The Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni is a Neolithic subterranean structure dating to the Saflieni phase (3300 – 3000 BC) in Maltese prehistory, located in Paola, Malta. It is often simply referred to as the Hypogeum (Maltese: Ipoġew), literally meaning "underground" in Greek. The Hypogeum is thought to have been a sanctuary and necropolis, with the remains of more than 7,000 people documented by archaeologists, and is among the best-preserved examples of the Maltese temple building culture that also produced the Megalithic Temples and Xagħra Stone Circle.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
