Description

Alexander Nikolayevich Ostrovsky (1823–1886) was a Russian playwright, generally considered the greatest representative of the Russian realistic period.

Overall, the dramatist wrote 47 plays, including ‘Stay in Your Own Sled’, ‘A Profitable Position’, ‘Even a Wise Man Stumbles’, ‘Talents and Admirers’, ‘Guilty Without Guilt’, ‘The Storm’, ‘The Forest’, ‘Wolves and Sheep’, ‘Without a Dowry’, and others. Ostrovsky almost single-handedly created a Russian national repertoire. His dramas are among the most widely read and frequently performed stage pieces in Russia.

Obverse

In the centre the relief image of the National Coat of Arms of the Russian Federation, above the semicircular inscription along the rim THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION framed on both sides by ornamental elements of doubled rhombuses, in the lower part of the disc, at the edge the horizontal inscription 2 RUBLES and the date 2023 under it, over it to the right the mint trade mark.

The two main elements of Russian state symbols (the two-headed eagle and the mounted figure slaying the dragon) predate Peter the Great. Today, however, the official description does not refer to the rider on the central shield as representing Saint George, mainly in order to maintain the secular character of the modern Russian state. The imperial crowns on each head stand for the unity and sovereignty of Russia, both as a whole and in its constituent republics and regions. The orb and scepter grasped in the eagle's talons are traditional heraldic symbols of sovereign power and authority. They have been retained in the modern Russian arms despite the fact that the Russian Federation is not a monarchy.

Reverse

Depicts a relief image of Alexander Ostrovsky’s portrait against the background of a raised grande drape; an image of a scene from the play The Storm, cast in relief and laser-treated for matte finishing, on the left; and a relief image of a quill, the facsimile of the playwright’s signature, and the years of his birth and death ‘1823’ and ‘1886’ below.

The Storm (Russian: Гроза, sometimes translated as The Thunderstorm) is a drama in five acts. As with Ostrovsky's other plays, The Storm is a work of social criticism, which is directed particularly towards the Russian merchant class. The Storm provoked fierce debate in the Russian press of the time concerning moral issues.
