Nizhny Novgorod (lit. 'Lower Novgorod/Lower New City'), colloquially shortened to Nizhny, from the 13th to the 17th century Novgorod of the Lower Land, known from 1932 to 1990 as Gorky, is the administrative centre of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and the Volga Federal District in Russia.

Nizhny Novgorod was awarded the honorary title City of Labour Valour for the great contribution of its residents to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945, uninterrupted manufacture of military and civilian products at industrial enterprises and people’s labour heroism and commitment.

On July 2, 2020, the opening ceremony of the monument Valiant Home Front Workers of Gorky took place at the "Gorkovchane - Front" memorial site. This event was held to commemorate the honorary title "City of Labor Valor" bestowed upon Nizhny Novgorod. The monument was created by sculptor Alexey Shchitov. The memorial was funded through donations from local enterprises and charitable contributions. The bronze sculptural composition of an elderly man, a woman, and a boy, symbolizing those who contributed to the country's victory on the home front during the Great Patriotic War, is placed on a pedestal made of dark granite.
