Description

October 16, 2012 – The Banco de la República de Colombia has issued a new and extended family of coins. The new coins are lighter and, in most cases, smaller than their predecessors – making them cheaper to produce, according to the Bank, as well as cheaper and easier to manage in circulation. Moreover, they have a range of new security features, along with intricate design and engraving, to make counterfeiting more difficult.

There is a consistent design theme through all five coins in the new series of native Colombian fauna and flora, which is intended to reflect the country’s biodiversity. The coins also feature images of water, which is seen as essential to the country’s ecological heritage.

The coins were designed by the Colombian artists Johana Calle and José Antonio Suarez.

The scarlet macaw (Ara macao) is a large yellow, red and blue Neotropical parrot native to humid evergreen forests of the Americas. Its range extends from southeastern Mexico to Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela and Brazil, the Caribbean island of Trinidad, as well as the Pacific island of Coiba.

The scarlet macaw is about 81 centimeters (32 in) long, with predominantly scarlet plumage, blue tail feathers, and yellow wing coverts. They have white skin around the eyes, black lower mandibles, and light yellow eyes in adulthood. They make loud calls to communicate. In captivity, they can live up to 75-90 years, with a more common lifespan of 40-50 years. They are often confused with the green-winged macaw, which has distinct red facial markings and lacks yellow in the wings.
