Description

Saddam Hussein (1937–2006) was an Iraqi politician who served as the president of Iraq from 1979 to 2003. He was a prominent member of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party and later took leadership roles in the country. Born in Al-Awja, near Tikrit, he joined the Ba'ath Party in 1957 and played a significant role in the 17 July Revolution. He became vice president and eventually took formal power in 1979. Saddam's rule was marked by the Iran-Iraq War, the invasion of Kuwait, and suppression of uprisings.

In 2003, the United States and its allies invaded Iraq, accusing Saddam of having weapons of mass destruction. He was captured in 2003, tried, and executed in 2006. Saddam ruled with a pervasive cult of personality and faced allegations of a repressive authoritarian government, described by some as totalitarian.

The Arab Socialist Baʿth Party, founded in Syria by Mishel ʿAflaq, Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn al-Bīṭār, and Zakī al-ʾArsūzī and their associates, promoted Baʿthism—an ideology that combines Arab nationalism, pan-Arabism, Arab socialism, and anti-imperialism. Baʿthism advocates for the unification of the Arab world into a single state and emphasizes the principles of "Unity, Liberty, Socialism," focusing on Arab unity and freedom from non-Arab influence.

The Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party - Iraq Region, known as the Iraqi Regional Branch, was established in 1951 by Fuad al-Rikabi. Originally part of the broader Ba'ath Party, it later shifted its allegiance to the Iraqi-dominated Ba'ath movement after the 1966 split in the original party.
