Reverse

Depicts a capercaillie on the right, the denomination and an interlocked C, reminiscent of King Charles II's royal cypher, on the left side.

The western capercaillie, scientifically known as Tetrao urogallus and referred to as the Eurasian capercaillie, wood grouse, heather cock, cock-of-the-woods, or simply capercaillie, is a substantial member of the grouse family and holds the title of being the largest among all living grouse species. It can be encountered throughout Europe and the Palearctic region and is primarily a ground-dwelling forest grouse that is famous for its distinctive courtship display. Notably, there is a significant difference in size between male and female capercaillies, with males being nearly twice as large. The term "capercaillie" originates from a modification of the Scottish Gaelic "capall coille," which translates to "Horse of the woodland."

The design is a collaboration between Royal Mint artisans, engravers, and overseen by Gordon Summers, the Royal Mint’s chief engraver, involved support from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).
