Description

On October 12, 2023, The Royal Mint revealed the new designs for circulation coins during King Charles III's reign. These designs, spanning from one penny to two pounds, showcase Britain's natural habitat and wildlife, reflecting the King's strong commitment to conservation. The coin denominations, compositions, weights, and sizes remain unchanged.

Obverse

Depicts King Charles III’s effigy, surrounded by the Latin inscription. Engraver's initials on the neck.

The 2023 coins issued in the Brilliant Uncirculated & Proof sets featured a special Tudor crown privy mark.

CHARLES III DEI GRATIA REX FIDEI DEFENSOR means King Charles III, by the Grace of God King, Defender of the Faith.

Engraver: Martin Jennings (MJ)

Reverse

Depicts a puffin on the right, the denomination and an interlocked C, reminiscent of King Charles II's royal cypher, on the left side.

Striking in their appearance, around 10% of the worldwide puffin population breeds along the UK’s coastline. Classed as a Red List species, the population is predicted to severely regress over the next 30 years, but there is hope for the puffin if action is taken now to protect their nesting sites and food supply. The name of the English island Lundy is believed to come from the old Norse word for "puffin island" (Lundey).

The design is a collaboration between Royal Mint artisans, engravers, and overseen by Gordon Summers, the Royal Mint’s chief engraver, involved support from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).
