Description

On October 12, 2023, The Royal Mint revealed the new designs for circulation coins during King Charles III's reign. These designs, spanning from one penny to two pounds, showcase Britain's natural habitat and wildlife, reflecting the King's strong commitment to conservation. The coin denominations, compositions, weights, and sizes remain unchanged.

The 2023 coins issued in the Brilliant Uncirculated & Proof sets featured a special Tudor crown privy mark.

Reverse

Depicts an Atlantic salmon on the right, the denomination and an interlocked C, reminiscent of King Charles II's royal cypher, on the left side.

The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is the third largest of the Salmonidae, behind Siberian taimen and Pacific Chinook salmon, growing up to a meter in length. They can be found in pristine rivers in Scotland and Wales, along with those in North and Southwest England. Wood and stone weirs along streams and ponds were used for millennia to harvest salmon in the rivers of New England.

The design is a collaboration between Royal Mint artisans, engravers, and overseen by Gordon Summers, the Royal Mint’s chief engraver, involved support from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).
