Description

In 2011 the Italian State Mint and Polygraphic Institute began a coin series entitled Flora and Fauna in Art Masterpieces. A Dual program with a €20 gold coin dedicated to flora or botanical themes, and a €50 gold coin inspired by fauna or zoological themes. The coins would illustrate and celebrate plant and animal life as portrayed in classical art through the ages.

The Italian Renaissance (Italian: Rinascimento) was a period in Italian history covering the 15th and 16th centuries. The period is known for the initial development of the broader Renaissance culture that spread across Europe and marked the transition from the Middle Ages to modernity. The Italian Renaissance has a reputation for its achievements in painting, architecture, sculpture, literature, music, philosophy, science, technology, and exploration. Italy became the recognized European leader in all these areas by the late 15th century, during the era of the Peace of Lodi (1454–1494) agreed between Italian states.

Obverse

The Marzocco, a lion holding with its right forefoot a shield with the lily of Florence, a symbol of republican liberty, from a sculpture realised by Donatello nowadays conserved at the Museo del Bargello in Florence. Around, left to right, “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA”; below, a heraldic lily, the symbol of the city; all encased in a dot-decorated frame.

The Marzocco is the heraldic lion that is a symbol of Florence and was apparently the first piece of public secular sculpture commissioned by the Republic of Florence, in the late 14th century. The lion stood at the heart of the city in the Piazza della Signoria at the end of the platform attached to the Palazzo Vecchio called the ringhiera, from which speakers traditionally harangued the crowd.
