Description

Francesco Lazzaro Guardi (1712–1793) was an Italian painter, nobleman, and member of the Venetian School. He is considered to be among the last practitioners, along with his brothers, of the classic Venetian school of painting.

In the early part of his career, he collaborated with his older brother Gian Antonio in the production of religious paintings. After Gian Antonio's death in 1760, Francesco concentrated on vedute. The earliest of these show the influence of Canaletto, but he gradually adopted a looser style characterized by spirited brush strokes and freely imagined architecture.

Obverse

Depicts the painting "San Giorgio Maggiore with the Giudecca and the Zitelle" by Francesco Guardi. The country name above.

The painting shows a view across the Bacino di San Marco, looking towards the islands of San Giorgio Maggiore (on the left) and Giudecca (on the right). This view – with the church of San Giorgio Maggiore, designed by Andrea Palladio (1508-1580), as its focal point – is taken from the quayside of the mainland (the Riva degli Schiavoni) and represents one of the most popular scenes within 18th-century Venetian view painting. However, the painting is not topographically accurate and the view has been manipulated for artistic effect – thus the real subject of the painting is arguably the unique atmosphere of Venice. The composition exists in numerous versions.
