Description

The Guardia di Finanza (GdF) is an Italian law enforcement agency reporting to the Minister of Economy and Finance. It operates as a militarized police force, distinct from the Ministry of Defence, focusing on financial crime, smuggling, and combating the illegal drug trade. With a fleet of over 600 boats and ships and more than 100 aircraft, it patrols Italy's territorial waters, while also serving as border police and handling customs duties at Italian airports. Interpol describes the GdF as a force with military status, nationally tasked with financial crime and illegal drugs trafficking investigations. Established on October 5, 1774, the GdF's origins trace back to the "Light Troops Legion," marking its Raising Day.

Obverse

Depicts a stylized version of the heraldic emblem of the Guardia di Finanza in the centre. It includes various elements: the mountain Cimon della Pala (the best-known peak of the Pale di San Martino group, in the Dolomites, northern Italy), the sea and the sky, the griffin, a mythological animal that, according to legend, watches over the protection of the treasury, symbolized by the treasure chest of the state and the crown with turrets. The country abbreviation “RI” and the dates “1774-2024” below, the mintmark “R” and the engraver's initials “MB” on the right. The inscription above. The outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
