Description

Rita Levi-Montalcini (1909–2012) was an Italian neurobiologist. In 1986, she received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, jointly with colleague Stanley Cohen, for their discovery of nerve growth factor (NGF). From 2001 until her passing, she held the position of Senator for Life in the Italian Senate, a tribute to her significant scientific contributions. Remarkably, on 22 April 2009, she celebrated her 100th birthday, becoming the first Nobel laureate to reach this milestone, with a celebratory event at Rome's City Hall.

Obverse

Depicts a portrait of Levi-Montalcini, inspired by a photograph by Manuela Fabbri. In the background on the right is a microscope borrowed from a medal designed by Italian scientist Gino Levi-Montalcini's brother, with the horseshoe-shaped base, a symbol of good luck for her Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1986. The issue reason "RITA LEVI-MONTALCINI" appears above, with the "RI" representing the Italian Republic and the "R" denoting the Roman mint on the left. Below the motif, the year of issue "2024" is visible, along with the initials "SP" by the coin designer at the bottom right of the image. The outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
