The Citadel, also known as the Castello, is the fortified stronghold of Victoria on Gozo, Malta, with a history dating back to the Bronze Age. Originally an acropolis of the Punic-Roman city of Gaulos, it became a medieval castle serving as a refuge for Gozo's inhabitants. Over time, it evolved into a gunpowder fortress, undergoing major reconstruction in the 16th and 17th centuries. Despite plans to demolish it in later centuries, the Citadel stands today, housing churches and historic structures like the Cathedral of the Assumption. Recognized for its historical significance, it has been on Malta's tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1998.
