Description

The 1986 FIFA World Cup, held in Mexico from May 31 to June 29, was the 13th edition and featured a 24-team format. Originally slated for Colombia, Mexico stepped in as host after economic issues forced Colombia to resign in 1982. Argentina won the tournament, led by captain Diego Maradona, who famously scored the "Hand of God" goal and another dubbed the "Goal of the Century" in the quarter-final against England. The competition introduced the Mexican wave to global audiences and marked the first appearance of Canada, Denmark, and Iraq at the final stage. The format changed from the previous edition, with the knockout round replacing group stages. Italy, the defending champions, were eliminated by France in the Round of 16. Total attendance reached 2,394,031, with an average of 46,039 per match.

Obverse

Depicts a statue of an Aztec rain god (Tláloc) dividing the event year, the inscriptions FIFA WORLD CUP above and MEXICO below, and the engraver's initials (BGY) on the middle right.

Tláloc, the Aztec god of rain and fertility, was venerated for his role in providing life and sustenance through rituals and sacrifices. Despite his control over natural phenomena like hail, thunder, and lightning, he was not seen as malevolent. Associated with caves, springs, and mountains, especially Cerro Tláloc, where he was believed to reside, his worship was widespread in ancient Mexico. Depicted through symbols like butterflies, jaguars, and serpents, offerings such as the Mexican marigold were made to him. The worship of a storm god with attributes akin to Tláloc's dates back to pre-Aztec civilizations like Teotihuacan, evident from discoveries of shrines and offerings.
