Description

The 1986 FIFA World Cup, held in Mexico from May 31 to June 29, was the 13th edition and featured a 24-team format. Originally slated for Colombia, Mexico stepped in as host after economic issues forced Colombia to resign in 1982. Argentina won the tournament, led by captain Diego Maradona, who famously scored the "Hand of God" goal and another dubbed the "Goal of the Century" in the quarter-final against England. The competition introduced the Mexican wave to global audiences and marked the first appearance of Canada, Denmark, and Iraq at the final stage. The format changed from the previous edition, with the knockout round replacing group stages. Italy, the defending champions, were eliminated by France in the Round of 16. Total attendance reached 2,394,031, with an average of 46,039 per match.
