Description

The great bustard (Otis tarda), the only living member of the genus Otis, is a bird in the bustard family. Its habitat spans from northern Morocco to temperate Central and East Asia, primarily inhabiting open grasslands and farmland. Endangered since 2023 and listed as a Vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List since 1996, the global population as of 2008 ranged between 44,000 and 51,000 birds, with approximately 38,000 to 47,000 in Europe, including over 30,000 in Spain. Hungary boasted the next largest population with around 1,555 birds in 2012.
