The water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), also known as the Asian water buffalo, is a large bovine native to South Asia, Southeast Asia, and China. Domesticated for thousands of years, it plays a crucial role in agriculture, particularly in rice cultivation, as it is adept at working in wet, muddy conditions. Water buffaloes are also valued for their milk, which is rich in fat and used to produce dairy products like mozzarella cheese.
Wild water buffalo, now endangered, are significantly larger and less common than their domesticated counterparts. These animals are well-adapted to swampy habitats and are often found wallowing in water to regulate their body temperature. Their immense strength and versatility make them a vital part of rural economies in many Asian countries.
