Zebras, distinctive African equines characterized by their iconic black-and-white striped coats, encompass three extant species: Grévy's zebra, the plains zebra, and the mountain zebra. Belonging to the subgenus Hippotigris within the Equus genus, zebras share evolutionary ties with horses and asses, collectively representing the sole living members of the Equidae family. Each zebra boasts a unique stripe pattern, a feature that has sparked various theories regarding its evolutionary purpose, with prevailing evidence suggesting its role as a deterrent against biting flies. These animals inhabit diverse landscapes across eastern and southern Africa, ranging from savannahs and grasslands to woodlands, shrublands, and mountainous terrains, showcasing their adaptability to a wide array of habitats. Zebras, with their striking appearance and significant ecological role, stand as iconic symbols of the African wilderness.
