Djibouti adopted its national emblem upon gaining independence from France on June 27, 1977. The emblem features laurel branches on the sides and encloses a vertical spear with a shield in front. Below the shield, two hands holding large machetes represent the nation's main ethnic groups, the Afar and the Issa. At the top of the spear is a red star, symbolizing unity between the Issa and Afar peoples.

The springbok, also known as the springbuck (scientifically Antidorcas marsupialis), inhabits primarily South and Southwest Africa. It stands as the sole representative of the Antidorcas genus and was initially documented by the German zoologist Eberhard August Wilhelm von Zimmermann in 1780. Within this species, three subspecies have been recognized. Exhibiting a slender build and long legs, the springbok stands at shoulder heights ranging from 71 to 86 cm (28 to 34 in) and weighs between 27 and 42 kg (60 and 93 lb). Both males and females sport a set of black horns measuring 35 to 50 cm (14 to 20 in) in length, curving rearward. Distinguished by a white facial coloration, a dark stripe extending from the eyes to the mouth, and a light-brown coat adorned with a reddish-brown streak traversing from the upper foreleg to the buttocks along the flanks reminiscent of the Thomson's gazelle, the springbok also features a distinctive white rump flap.
