Description

With a history that is believed to date back more than 3,000 years, China is one of the world’s oldest civilisations in the world. Deeply rooted with a storied past, it’s no surprise that Chinese culture is full of ancient tradition, rich heritage and mythical folklore. The perfect example of this is the Chinese zodiac which fully encompasses all three.

The Chinese zodiac is a classification scheme that assigns an animal and its reputed attributes to each year in a repeating 12-year cycle. The 12-year cycle is an approximation to the 11.85-year orbital period of Jupiter. Identifying this scheme using the generic term "zodiac" reflects several superficial similarities to the Western zodiac. Nevertheless, there are major differences between the two: the animals of the Chinese zodiac are not associated with constellations spanned by the ecliptic plane. The Chinese 12-part cycle corresponds to years, rather than months. The Chinese zodiac is represented by 12 animals, whereas some of the signs in the Western zodiac are not animals, despite the implication of the etymology of the word zodiac.

Obverse

Depicts the national emblem surrounded by a wreath, with the country's name inscribed in French above it, denomination between metal, purity and weight. In the foreground, the Zodiac dragon, showing the lóng character for the fire-breathing dragon facing left, inscription above, and the issue year below.

Djibouti adopted its national emblem upon gaining independence from France on June 27, 1977. The emblem features laurel branches on the sides and encloses a vertical spear with a shield in front. Below the shield, two hands holding large machetes represent the nation's main ethnic groups, the Afar and the Issa. At the top of the spear is a red star, symbolizing unity between the Issa and Afar peoples.

The dragon holds the fifth position in the zodiac cycle and holds significant cultural importance in China. Regarded as a symbol of great cultural significance, the Chinese dragon is viewed as having mystical abilities, in stark contrast to the fire-breathing creatures in Western mythology. Portrayed as wise and powerful, the dragon embodies qualities such as courage, confidence, and a spirit of adventure. Moreover, it is seen as a representation of success and ambition. Consequently, individuals born in the Year of the Dragon are believed to exhibit these admirable traits. Notable personalities born under this zodiac sign include naturalist Charles Darwin, two-time British Prime Minister Harold Wilson, Beatles founding member John Lennon, singer Tom Jones, and actor Benedict Cumberbatch.

People born within these date ranges can be said to have been born in the "Year of the Dragon": 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012.
