Description

István Bibó (1911–1979) was a Hungarian lawyer, civil servant, politician, and political theorist.

During the 1940s, Bibó held a seat in the Hungarian Parliament, where he ardently championed democratic reforms and the safeguarding of civil liberties. Following the Soviet occupation of Hungary at the close of World War II, he became actively involved in resistance efforts against communism.

Amidst the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, Bibó emerged as a key figure in the Imre Nagy government, serving as Minister of State and contributing significantly to endeavors aimed at establishing a more democratic and autonomous Hungary. Subsequent to the crushing of the revolution by Soviet forces, Bibó was arrested and sentenced to prison; however, international pressure ultimately led to his release.

Throughout his lifetime, Bibó remained steadfast in his commitment to democratic principles, human rights, and the rule of law. He continued to produce extensive writings on political philosophy and constitutional law, offering incisive critiques of totalitarian regimes while advocating fervently for democratic governance.
