Description

The 2012 Summer Olympics, formally the Games of the XXX Olympiad and commonly known as London 2012, took place in London and to a lesser extent across the United Kingdom from 25 July to 12 August 2012. During the Games, Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time, winning his 22nd medal. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Brunei entered female athletes for the first time, so that every currently eligible country has sent a female competitor to at least one Olympic Games. Women's boxing was included for the first time, thus the Games became the first at which every sport had female competitors. The final medal tally was led by the United States, followed by China and host Great Britain.

Obverse

Depicts three female kayakers in profile view, each with a different paddle posture. Underneath the furthest kayak depicted, on the left side, the engraver's privy mark is placed. At the edge, in the top inscription, the inscription "XXX. SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES" is displayed, while in the bottom text, the inscription "LONDON" is visible.

Canoeing has been a featured competition sport in the Summer Olympic Games since the 1936 Games in Berlin, with earlier inclusion as a demonstration sport at the 1924 Games in Paris. There are two disciplines of canoeing in Olympic competition: slalom and sprint.

Competitors in this sport utilize two styles of boats: canoes, which can accommodate 1 or 2 occupants, and kayaks, which can accommodate 1, 2, or 4 occupants. This distinction influences the designation of each event. For instance, "C-1" signifies a canoe singles event, while "K-2" denotes a kayak doubles event. Races typically span 500 meters or 1000 meters in length, although there were also 10 km events from 1936 to 1956. On August 13, 2009, the International Canoe Federation announced that the men's 500 m events would be replaced at the 2012 Summer Olympics by 200 m events, including the addition of K-1 200 m for women. This decision was ratified during their 2009 Board of Directors meeting in Windsor, Berkshire, Great Britain, on December 5, 2009.
