Independence Day, celebrated annually on 14 August, is a national holiday in Pakistan marking the country's independence and establishment as a sovereign state in August 1947, following the end of British rule. This milestone was achieved through the Pakistan Movement, which sought to create an independent Muslim state in the north-western regions of British India, led by the All-India Muslim League under Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The Indian Independence Act 1947 facilitated the formation of the Dominion of Pakistan, comprising West Pakistan (present-day Pakistan) and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). In 1947, Independence Day coincided with the 27th day of Ramadan, a night considered sacred in Islam as one of the potential Laylat al-Qadr nights.
