Description

Ruth Katherina Martha Pfau (1929–2017), was a German-Pakistani Catholic nun and physician, part of the "Society of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary." She moved from Germany to Pakistan in 1961, dedicating over 55 years to combating leprosy. Pfau received numerous awards, including the Hilal-i-Pakistan, Hilal-i-Imtiaz, Nishan-i-Quaid-i-Azam, and Sitara-i-Quaid-i-Azam. Pfau helped establish 157 leprosy clinics across Pakistan, treating over 56,780 people. Fazaia Ruth Pfau Medical College and Dr. Ruth Pfau Hospital in Karachi are named in her honor.

Depicts a crescent and star and value above wheat ears, with the country name written above in Urdu, and date below, denomination on both sides.

The star and crescent is an iconographic symbol used in various historical contexts but most well known today as a symbol of the former Ottoman Empire and, by popular extension, the Islamic world. It appears on the national flag and state emblem of Pakistan.
