The China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a 3,000 km infrastructure project under construction in Pakistan. This sea-and-land-based corridor aims to secure and shorten China's energy import routes from the Middle East, bypassing the potentially blockable Straits of Malacca between Malaysia and Indonesia. By developing a deep-water port at Gwadar in the Arabian Sea and constructing road and rail lines from this port to Xinjiang in western China, the project seeks to facilitate trade between Europe and China. In Pakistan, CPEC aims to address electricity shortages, develop infrastructure, modernize transportation networks, and transition the economy from agriculture-based to industrial-based.
