Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874–1942), known as L. M. Montgomery, was a Canadian author celebrated for her extensive body of work, which includes novels, essays, short stories, and poetry. Her literary career began in 1908 with the publication of "Anne of Green Gables." Over her lifetime, she authored 20 novels, 530 short stories, 500 poems, and 30 essays. "Anne of Green Gables" was an instant success, and the story of the orphan Anne Shirley brought Montgomery international fame. Most of her novels are set on Prince Edward Island, transforming locations within Canada’s smallest province into significant literary landmarks and popular tourist destinations, particularly Green Gables farm, which inspired the Prince Edward Island National Park. In 1935, she was appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire.
Montgomery’s works, along with her diaries and letters, continue to be studied by scholars and cherished by readers worldwide. The L. M. Montgomery Institute at the University of Prince Edward Island is dedicated to the academic exploration of her life, works, cultural impact, and legacy.

Depicts a profile portrait of L. M. Montgomery from the period when she wrote Anne of Green Gables, accompanied by her signature and the cat drawing she often included in inscriptions. The inscription “150 YEARS ANS” commemorates the 150th anniversary of her birth in the center. Celebrating the power of imagination in Montgomery's life and works, the design transitions from a depiction of the author writing (illustrated by a portfolio and inkwell) to an image of Anne Shirley, the novel’s eponymous heroine, gazing out at Prince Edward Island. This idyllic setting not only serves as the backdrop for Anne of Green Gables but also inspired many of Montgomery's other stories. CANADA 20 DOLLARS |
