Baptism (from Koinē Greek: βάπτισμα, meaning 'immersion, dipping in water') is a Christian sacrament of initiation, typically involving water. It can be performed by sprinkling, pouring, or immersing in water, usually three times to represent the Trinity. According to the synoptic gospels, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. Baptism is considered a sacrament in most churches and an ordinance in others. The practice of baptizing using the Trinitarian formula is common and serves as a basis for Christian unity. The term "christening" is often used for infant baptisms. In many denominations, baptism is required for church membership, and it has named the Baptist churches and denominations.

Depicts John the Baptist in the act of pouring water from a shell onto the head of Jesus. The use of a shell is tied to the Christian tradition where the shell symbolizes life and resurrection, rebirth and purification. As Pope Francis has affirmed, at Baptism “it is God who comes into us, purifies, heals our heart, makes us forever his children.” The state name and the mintmark of the Italian State Mint and Polygraphic Institute (R) above, and the denomination in the center below.
