Description

Andrew I, also known as Andrew the White or the Catholic (c. 1015 – 1060), ruled as King of Hungary from 1046 to 1060. Descending from a younger branch of the Árpád dynasty, he spent fifteen years in exile before a major revolt by pagan Hungarians enabled him to seize the throne from King Peter Orseolo. Andrew I significantly bolstered Catholicism in Hungary and successfully defended the kingdom's independence against the Holy Roman Empire.

His efforts to secure the succession for his son, Solomon, led to a rebellion by his brother Béla, who forcefully deposed Andrew in 1060. Andrew sustained severe injuries during the conflict and died before his brother's coronation as king.
