The Passing of the Crown Coin commemorates the transition of power from Queen Margrethe II to King Frederik X. On 31 December 2023, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announced her abdication, effective 14 January 2024, during her New Year's Eve address, marking the first voluntary abdication of a Danish monarch since 1146. She was succeeded by her son, King Frederik X. Margrethe, who had previously vowed never to step down, cited her deteriorating health, including a major back surgery in February 2023, as the reason for her decision. In her speech, she thanked the public for their support and expressed confidence in the new monarch. Her decision was shared with only a few close individuals before the public announcement.
