Reverse

Depicts a crowned portcullis with chains, adapted from the Badge of Henry VII and now serving as the Badge of the Palace of Westminster. Below the portcullis is the issue year while the face value appears above it.

A portcullis, derived from the French term porte coulissante ("sliding door"), is a heavy, vertically-closing gate commonly found in medieval fortifications. It consists of a latticed grille made from wood, metal, or a combination of both, designed to slide down grooves inset within the gateway's jambs.

Engraver: Christopher Ironside
