Description

Produced by the Royal Mint in gift card presentations for Christenings and baby gifts in blue for boys or pink for girls.

This coin is a traditional newborn gift. As Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcome their third child HRH Prince Louis, the Royal Mint captured this historic and happy moment with the beautifully packaged lucky silver penny.

Obverse

The fifth crowned portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the George IV State Diadem and drop earrings.

The George IV State Diadem, officially the Diamond Diadem, is a type of crown that was made in 1820 for King George IV. The diadem is worn by queens and queens consort in procession to coronations and State Openings of Parliament. The piece of jewelry has been featured in paintings and on stamps and currency. It can be seen in the Queen's Gallery at Buckingham Palace.

ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA FIDEI DEFENSATRIX means Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen and Defender of the Faith.

Reverse

A crowned portcullis with chains (an adaptation of the Badge of Henry VII which is now the Badge of the Palace of Westminster), with the numeral "1" written below the portcullis, and facial value above the portcullis.

A portcullis (from the French porte coulissante, "sliding door") is a heavy vertically-closing gate typically found in medieval fortifications, consisting of a latticed grille made of wood, metal, or a combination of the two, which slides down grooves inset within each jamb of the gateway.

The reverse represents a return to the 1971 Christopher Ironside design which was replaced on circulating coinage by the Matthew Dent Royal Shield design in 2008.
