Description

Rudolf Maister (1874–1934) was a Slovenian military leader, poet, and national hero who played a pivotal role in securing Slovenian territory during the turbulent post-World War I period. Born in Kamnik, Maister is best known for his efforts in 1918 to establish Slovenian sovereignty in Styria and Carinthia, regions contested in the aftermath of the Austro-Hungarian Empire's dissolution.

He formed the "Maister's Army," a volunteer force that successfully took control of Maribor and other parts of Lower Styria, ensuring they remained part of the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia). Maister was also a celebrated poet, blending patriotic themes with reflections on nature and human experience. His legacy is honored in Slovenia, where he is remembered as a defender of national identity and territorial integrity.
