Ice hockey is one of the most popular sports in Finland, and the first records of something like ice hockey being played date from the late 19th century.

Finland's national ice hockey team first attained international success in the 1960s. Since then, the whole nation has celebrated the success of the national team on many occasions. The crowning achievements of the Finnish men's national team, dubbed the Lions, include two world championships and several medals won in the Olympic Games.

In addition to the men's team, Finland has had cause to celebrate the success of the U20s national team, the Young Lions. They won the championship trophy after a 4-3 gold medal game over Russia at the IIHF World Junior Championship in Helsinki (26 December 2015 – 5 January 2016).
