Sēlija, also known as Selonia, is a historical and cultural region in southeastern Latvia, named after the ancient Selonians, a Baltic tribe that once inhabited the area. Located between the Daugava River and the Lithuanian border, Sēlija is known for its picturesque landscapes, dense forests, and rich agricultural traditions. Though it lacks administrative recognition as a separate region, it shares cultural ties with both Latgale and Zemgale. The region is home to several historic towns and cities, including Jēkabpils, the largest city in Sēlija, which lies on the banks of the Daugava and serves as an important regional center. Other notable towns include Aknīste, known for its historical connections to Lithuania, and Viesīte, which has a strong railway heritage. Sēlija is dotted with medieval castles, manor houses, and wooden churches, reflecting its diverse history. Today, the region remains a symbol of Latvia’s deep-rooted past and rural charm, preserving its distinct dialect and cultural traditions.
