Description

The Great Siege of Malta took place in 1565, when the Ottoman Empire launched a massive military campaign to capture the strategic island of Malta from the Knights Hospitaller, a Christian military order. The Ottomans, seeking control over the central Mediterranean and to eliminate the Knights' base, deployed a fleet and army estimated at over 30,000 men, vastly outnumbering the defenders. The Knights, led by Grand Master Jean de Valette, along with Maltese militia and a small number of Spanish troops, fiercely defended key fortifications such as Fort St. Elmo, Fort St. Angelo, and Mdina. Despite heavy losses and brutal fighting, the defenders held out for over three months until a relief force from Sicily arrived in September, forcing the Ottomans to retreat. The siege was a turning point in European-Ottoman conflicts, halting Ottoman expansion into the western Mediterranean and cementing the Knights' heroic legacy.

Obverse

Depicts the coat of arms of Malta, the state name, and the year of issue.

The present coat of arms depicts a shield showing a heraldic representation of the national flag of Malta; above the shield a mural crown with a sally port and five turrets representing the fortifications of Malta and denoting a city-state; and around the shield a wreath of two branches: the dexter of olive, the sinister of palm, symbols of peace and traditionally associated with Malta, tied at base with a ribbon with written the words Repubblika ta' Malta (“Republic of Malta” in Maltese) in capital letters.

The George Cross was incorporated into the Flag of Malta beginning in 1943 and remains on the flag adopted at the country's independence in 1964. The George Cross (GC) is the highest award bestowed by the British government for non-operational gallantry or gallantry not in the presence of an enemy. In the UK honours system, the George Cross is equal in stature to the Victoria Cross, the highest military gallantry award. This has been the case since the introduction of the award in 1940.

Depicts three galleys with oars and closed masts from the Christian fleet that took part in the Battle of Lepanto, making a significant contribution to the victory against the Ottoman fleet, encircled by a circle surrounded by a text of the event above and denomination below.

The Battle of Lepanto took place on October 7, 1571, and was a decisive naval engagement between the Holy League—a coalition of Catholic maritime states led by Spain, the Papal States, and the Republic of Venice—and the Ottoman Empire. Fought in the Gulf of Patras, near Lepanto (modern-day Nafpaktos, Greece), it marked the largest naval battle in the Mediterranean since antiquity, involving over 400 ships and around 100,000 men. Commanded by Don John of Austria, the Holy League fleet achieved a crushing victory over the Ottoman forces led by Ali Pasha, capturing or destroying most of their fleet and freeing thousands of Christian galley slaves. The battle did not end Ottoman dominance in the eastern Mediterranean, but it shattered the myth of their naval invincibility and marked a symbolic and strategic victory for Christian Europe during the height of the Ottoman-Habsburg rivalry.
