Description

Saint Agatha's Tower, commonly known as the Red Tower due to its distinctive color, is a prominent 17th-century fortification located on the Marfa Ridge near Mellieħa, Malta. Constructed between 1647 and 1649 during the rule of Grand Master Jean Paul Lascaris Castellar, it was part of the Lascaris towers but features a design more akin to the earlier Wignacourt towers, with a square plan and four corner turrets . Strategically positioned, the tower overlooks Għadira Bay and offers commanding views of the surrounding areas, including the straits between Comino and Gozo . Originally serving as a watchtower and signal post, it played a crucial role in Malta's coastal defense system. After periods of neglect, the tower underwent restoration between 1999 and 2001 and is now managed by Din l-Art Ħelwa, Malta's National Trust, serving as a historical site open to the public.

Obverse

Depicts the coat of arms of Malta between 1964 and 1975 encircled by the new name of the Republic of Malta with one dolphin from the coat arms below.

This coat of arms was adopted upon independence on 21 September 1964. It depicts two dolphins which support a depiction of the Maltese flag, one with palm branch and the other with an olive twig representing victory and peace respectively. Above is a mural crown shaped like a fort with five octagonal turrets surmounts a helmet, with red and white ribbons. Below are blue waves representing the surrounding Mediterranean Sea, the Maltese eight-pointed Cross representing the connection with the Order of St. John as well as courage and determination. The ribbon under the shield has the motto Virtute et Constantia (by Valour and Firmness). Nowadays, this motto is used by the National Order of Merit.
